Joop van Leeuwen (1962), A Summer's Day at the Beach

At auction

H 69 × B 79 cm

Oil on canvas Signed A sunlit beach scene with children playing, bathers and sailing boats beneath an expansive blue sky dotted with clouds. Along the water's edge, a lively scene unfolds, with strolling figures, beach chairs and small tents. The colourful balloons near the centre add a cheerful accent, drawing the eye into the composition. Joop van Leeuwen was born in 1962 in The Hague and studied at the Royal Academy of Art in his native city. He began painting Impressionist beach scenes while still a student; his subjects also include cityscapes and winter scenes. In this work, loose brushstrokes and a light palette of sandy tones, blue and white evoke the atmosphere of a summer's day on the coast. The figures are suggested with a few deft touches, preserving the vitality of the scene. The broad frame, with its pale inner border, complements the painting's luminous character. Canvas dimensions: 40 cm high by 50 cm wide Frame dimensions: 69 cm high by 79 cm wide
