This atmospheric painting, executed by an 18th-century follower of Philips Wouwerman (1619–1668), closely echoes the much-loved landscapes and equestrian scenes of the Haarlem master. The composition is dominated by a lively group of riders, horses and cattle, set against an expansive landscape with tents and a dramatically lit sky. The white horse at the centre of the composition, a recurring motif in Wouwerman’s oeuvre, provides the visual focal point, bringing light and movement to the scene. Philips Wouwerman was among the foremost Dutch painters of equestrian, hunting and landscape scenes of the Golden Age. His work remained highly sought after following his death and was widely collected and emulated throughout the 18th century. This painting is a characteristic example of that enduring influence.
