Dutch School (XX), Sailing Vessels on Still Water

At auction

H 40 × B 50 cm

Oil on panel Signed: Van Abcoude An atmospheric Dutch waterscape with a laden sailing vessel in the foreground and several moored boats in the distance. On the left bank, a house nestles among greenery, its façade and red roof reflected in the calm water. The brown sail provides a warm accent beneath an expansive, softly lit, cloud-filled sky. The painter brings sky, land and water together in a harmonious palette of pale blue, green and golden yellow. Fine details in the vessels and bankside vegetation invite closer contemplation, while the gentle reflections lend the scene a sense of stillness. This twentieth-century panel evokes the atmosphere of the traditional Dutch river landscape and is set in a richly ornamented, light-coloured frame. Ready to hang!
