Contstant van Hoorde (XX), Winter Townscape by the Water

At auction

H 35 × B 40 cm

Oil on panel Signed: C. van Hoorde A characterful winter scene with snow-covered houses lining a quay. Small vessels are moored beside the buildings, while a few figures stroll across the white foreground. The central brick house catches a warm glow of light, creating a striking accent amid the cool tones of snow, water and sky. The quay draws the eye deep into the composition, past façades and ships’ masts towards the open water. Broad, visible brushstrokes lend texture to the snow and overcast sky. The contrast between the dark clouds and pale rooftops creates a distinctly wintry atmosphere. This twentieth-century panel combines the intimacy of a harbour neighbourhood with the spaciousness of the Dutch waterside landscape.
