This iconic map was published in Amsterdam around 1649 by the world-renowned cartographer Joan Blaeu. The print was one of the highlights of his prestigious town atlas, Toneel der Steden van de Vereenigde Nederlanden. Blaeu was celebrated for his unrivalled precision and artistry. A close look at the detailed bird’s-eye view reveals the city’s canals, medieval walls, gates and the numerous orchards that once surrounded it, meticulously depicted as they appeared almost four centuries ago. What makes this particular example especially noteworthy is the presence of handwritten annotations in elegant ink and pencil script in the lower margin, including the note "Printed on a hand press" and the signature "Piet Trap, Utrecht" (a well-known Utrecht lithographer and printer of the 19th and early 20th centuries). Presented in a warm-toned wooden frame with a pronounced grain.
