Dutch Colonial V.O.C. Company Chest – 18th Century An authentic company chest made in Indonesia in the 18th century, during the era of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (V.O.C.), the Dutch East India Company. Chests of this type were used to transport and store trade goods, documents and personal belongings during sea voyages and at overseas trading posts. Made from solid hardwood, the chest has a robust, functional construction with straight sides and a flat lid. Its simple design reflects the practical purpose for which these chests were made. The wood has a beautiful, warm colour and a timeworn patina that lends the piece further character. Its compact yet generous proportions make this chest surprisingly easy to accommodate. At 66 cm high, 133.5 cm wide and 54 cm deep, it occupies relatively little floor space, while its length gives it a handsome presence. It is therefore ideally suited to a position against a wall, beneath a window or at the foot of a bed. Its low profile creates a greater sense of space than a tall cabinet, while its generous width lends it an appealing horizontal line. A lovely size for both traditional and contemporary interiors. Condition: good, with a repaired split in the lid and signs of age and use; please see photographs.
