Frans Manders (1939), Winter Landscape with Farmhouse

At auction

H 85 × B 105 cm

Oil on canvas, signed lower left. A tranquil winter landscape in which a farmhouse and several outbuildings nestle beneath a heavy, overcast sky. The snow-covered foreground catches the light, creating a striking contrast with the dark roofs and bare trees. Loose, visible brushstrokes lend texture to the snow, while the restrained palette of grey, brown and white emphasises the winter stillness. Frans Manders was born in Helmond in 1939 and worked as a draughtsman, graphic designer and illustrator before devoting himself entirely to his art. The Brabant landscape was an important subject in his figurative work. Through his association with the painter Dorus van Oorschot, he developed an interest in working from nature and capturing rural settings and their atmosphere. With its rural subject and free brushwork, this painting reflects that interest in landscape. The emphasis lies on the interplay of light, sky and buildings: the farmhouse provides a dark focal point within the expansive snowfield. A moulded frame in warm gold and brown tones complements the cool winter palette. Canvas dimensions: 70 cm high by 90 cm wide Frame dimensions: 85 cm high by 105 cm wide
