Burr Walnut Liqueur Cabinet, France, 1860-1870

€ 275

L 30 × B 21.5 × H 23 cm

This 19th-century French liqueur cabinet, also known as a ‘tantalus’, is crafted from fine burr walnut. The exterior is carefully inlaid with interlacing brass decoration, creating a subtle contrast with the dark wood. Two graceful brass handles adorn the sides, enhancing both the functionality and the stately appearance of the piece. In the 19th century, such a liqueur cabinet was a status symbol in French and European drawing rooms. It was used not only to present fine liqueurs after dinner, but also to store them securely. Its lockable design allowed owners to protect their spirits from unauthorised use by staff or guests. The interior of the case is lined with quilted red silk. This soft padding protected the crystal stoppers during transport. The compartments accommodate bottles up to 7cm in diameter.
